Testing Purity –
Here what you have to do is boil milk at a low temperature till it solidifies and turns into a hard substance also known as khoya or mawa. If it ends up having a very rough and a rock-solid residue it means that the milk is adulterated while a smooth oily residue means its good quality milk.
Synthetic milk –
This is not Milk it’s an entirely different component with really high degree of adulteration which is done to increase milk volume. We can test for synthetic by simply tasting it. If there is a bad taste, if it feels soapy when rubbed in between your fingers and if it turns to a yellowish shade when heated then you can be sure that the milk you receive is highly adulterated.
Water in milk –
We know that water seems to be harmless but it’s definitely not suitable for your pockets. to check for water all you have to do is drop a few droplets of milk on a smooth and angled surface and let it flow down. If the milk leaves a trail behind, it’s not pure milk.
Milk containing starch –
Some Vendors might add starch to milk to increase volume, this can be checked by adding 2 tablespoons of salt to 5ml of milk. The mixture would turn blue in case it contains starch otherwise it would remain the same.
Preservatives like formalin is used by many for preservation purposes. Since it is colorless and can preserve milk for longer periods of time and used by packaged manufacturers for adulteration purposes. Formalin content in milk can be checked by taking 10 ml of milk in a test-tube and adding 2-3 drops of sulphuric acid. If a blue ring appears on the surface of the milk it means it is adulterated.
Urea in milk –
This is the most common kind of adulteration found in milk as it doesn’t alter the taste of milk and is a bit difficult to detect. Urea content can be checked by mixing half a tablespoon of soybean powder and milk and rest it for 5 minutes. Once this is done all you have to do is dip a litmus paper into the mixture for 30 seconds and if the paper changes from the colour red to blue it proves the urea content in milk.
